Right now, getting a new one on Amazon would run me $135 plus tax, which is more than double what I'd be willing to pay if I was looking for a new controller. How much was it new, compared to other game controllers? I think I remember it being comparable to first party controllers. They've already done the development, and it doesn't seem to need many patches or maintenance. I really do hope that they bring the Steam controller back. I haven't been following it, but that's by guess. Remember Steam Machines / steam boxes? I think they just want to focus in VR. I mean including the "tilt around corners" with the gyro sensor.Īs for why Valve seems to be pulling out of the Steam Controller project, they probably only want to be doing one new thing at a time. When doing research on what games would be best with the SC, I found out that System Shock 2, a game that's something like SIXTEEN YEARS OLD has NATIVE SC support, with every important function bound to the default setup. I haven't used it in game yet, but even then, it works great as a mouse to use when browsing the computer. I picked one up used for $20 the other day. It's crap compared to most controllers, but the support and marketing for it is on point and that's why it's popular. Not really with the design and functionality of the device itself, it's great as it is, but with support and marketing. I really hope they make V2 and correct all their previous mistakes. Half Life franchise, Link, SC, and it will happen to VR as well. They make a revolutionary thing, then that thing just sits there, living off of fans, until not even fans can support it anymore. No wonder no one wants to code for that, it's horrible! And it's required for the hardware to work. That atrocity of the interface to this day continues to be the biggest downside to all Valve's ecosystem, including the hardware. And yes, it can basically do anything even without native support but it would have been nice. You need SC to be supported for games to show off its features. Which is also why it never really caught on except for us fans. He eventually made it, and Warmastered has native SC support now but boy was he confused, and i don't blame him, Valve never really made it easy for developers. I helped him by telling him about how Warframe has its support. I remember one dev for Darksiders Warmastered trying really hard to implement native SC support and being confused as to what that exactly means, that he asked on the forums. They never worked with developers to implement native SC support (they expected devs to just jump on board), they didn't develop easy tools for them to do so. It was marketed exactly once, when it came out, then it just kind of existed. Which is what has happened for all of Valve's successes thus far. Instead, they just kinda threw it out there, expecting gamers to recognize it's worth, and then hype it for Valve. The SC could have been huge if Valve had worked to sell gamers on the idea. Give it a couple more years, its nostalgic, and it's very rare for people to change loyalty for something different, even if what's different is better. While the vast majority of people know that it's not an Xbox controller, that's exactly why they don't want it because all they know is that Xbox controllers are good and have been good for years. While smart people like you and I will trust the reviews directly from the manufacturer, ie reviews on the Steam Store, the common people will always turn to Google and accept the criticism indited on it from long ago. Millions of average gamers abide by their reviews and social media presence to this day. When in reality, it has nothing to do with being an xbox controller, it's everything BUT that and the vast majority of people know that. Majority of the people like the controller, it's the minority of IGN "supreme journalism" types that gave it "it's a weird xbox controller" verdict and never revisited it. Valve wouldn't be here where it is if they only listened to "official reviewers". Of course they count, what are you talking about?
